what happens when analog and digital meet? or how to find real close friend in digital world?

British researchers recently focused on two most popular social networks -Myspace and Facebook. Here is what they have found out in their study: face to face interaction is the key if you want your friendship last, said Will Reader, an evolutionary psychologist at Sheffield Hallam University.

“Nearly all our close friends require face-to-face contact,” Reader told a meeting sponsored by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

In their study, Reader and colleagues asked people a series of questions about their attitudes toward friendships and found 90 percent of individuals said it was imperative to know somebody face-to-face to form the tightest bonds.

Other studies have shown most people have about 150 people in their extended networks, with just a small number considered a member of the inner circle of close friends, Reader said.

Ok, this is my REAL life story - where the line between analog and digital world is very thin (or does it exist?).
Yesterday one of my former student (big Myspace fan) said that he despises Facebook because of many reasons I shall not expose here but are connected with accessibility, their own social circle (they existed first at Myspace, before Facebook appeared), also in the last weeks found out that many friends in analog world discovered Myspace in the past 2 years, as I started with it since 2003 and didn’t pay attention on music demo bands and others. But nevertheless I got funny situation today. So here is the story.
Person A: moi. Person B: analog female friend. Person C: analog male friend. All are from the same block -city area. Person B:she is my friend for 11 years. Person C: He is my friend for 5 years. She is very into Myspace. He is alternative, but still on Facebook and doesn’t have time to e-socialize, an idle Facebook(er). He doesn’t know for her, but from my professional story/conversation we had today he found out for my (analog) friend - person B -from Myspace. He asked me this evening to show him the link as he is interested to be in her network. But if you want to be her friend, you need to join Myspace -I told him (via Google talk) *. Despite the fact that he is idle e-socializer, he joins Myspace and in two hours creates profile, makes design, etc. (he is idle , he doesn’t like it BUT if he wants to be the friend or more with her, he is filling up all those fields.). Meanwhile (2 hrs), phone conversation**: with person B, we talk ‘girls talk’ and among other things on social networks (she is psychologist) - we analyze. I mention that Person C (from our hood) would like to meet her, but he is a bit shy (he is very smart and creative designer and anthropologist), so I am sort of mediator/communicator. Ok, she said - tell him to add me as a friend at Myspace. Gosh! End of phone call. On the other side Person C is buzzing me via Google talk***. Seems his primal analog instincts made him to call me (”can I call you now?”) via phone*****, and we talk the same amount of time as I did with Person B. So, he wanted to find out, via phone, what he has to do to be her friend (not directly, no way!). After my directions for Myspace, he joined community this evening, added me as his first friend, and suppose will add her tomorrow. Where is the point? In the future posts you’ll more to know - not about person B and person C but on digital/analog and social online networks in practice. For now the only answer would be *****.
***** - person A, person B, person C => didn’t see each other for more than months, live approx. 20 minutes walk downtown area, and all are very busy, which doesn’t make any excuse for not seeing each other face to face.

digital culture/blogging autumn events

Trailer information and good news that soon all Serbian (and beyond) bloggers will gather at one place. Preliminary Blogowski announced gathering of the bloggers from Serbia and it should take place in Novi Sad, November 10th 2007. This would be the first bigger bloggers gathering with many interesting speakers and guests world wide. For more information - the official web site (it will be soon updated). Also if you are local or belong to Serbian blogosphere or write about it in any existing language, you can join group BlogOpen at Flickr. This would be great opportunity to talk about some current issues in Serbia on information society, e-communication infrastructure, the usage of the internet in education, as information tool for development and interaction in so called democratic society. Beside lectures on digital culture, communication, design, blogging, there will be workshops, and guests and visitors would have a chance to interact and exchange experience and talk about some problems. Interesting and rich autumn events are on the way. Beside the International Conference on Pedagogical Fautlines Amsterdam, and my session on open knowledge and education in digital era, later on the following event is the GA eIFL meeting in Belgrade.

Those who are in Amsterdam these days, let me know so we could meet as I am going to meet with my old friend Vesna, advanced course trainer and IT expert at Ripe, and remind ourselves of crazy the 90’s Belgradian days, as well as colleague IT wiz.and teacher Ad, from our European conference meetings. You can follow me via twitter these days or IM/email me if something important.

And yes, tomorrow’s Belgrade and Beyond blogoversary at Wordpress platform (1st year @WP). You will be informed on some changes to another domain, as I am trying to make/find decent design solutions. Any suggestion, support is welcome! Thanks to all readers who are taking their time to read my posts- in the future expect interesting posts that cover a bit different topics and as always unexpected ones.

Premier International team invest in Dopplr

For those who are not familiar with Dopplr (I wrote in some earlier posts), is social networking site for frequent travellers. This online social-travel service lets you keep track of your trusted friends and colleagues and lets you share your future travel plans with them. You can find out where they will be and when, it is perfect for people who spend a lot of time on the road. To have your Dopplr account you need invitation by someone who is already there. Once invited by an existing member you will be able to invite others to join Dopplr and share your travels. Dopplr is based in Helsinki, Finland. Today’s news from Dopplr blog say that this service has secured early-stage financing from an international group of experienced Internet investors.

This international team—frequent travellers who themselves use Dopplr—has separately made previous investments in many successful Internet companies, including Last.fm, Joost, FON, LinkedIn, Flickr, Technorati, Wikia, Xing, Stardoll, Six Apart and Netvibes.

“We’re gratified that so many world travellers have already found value in Dopplr,” said Lisa Sounio, CEO of Dopplr. “Having this international group of active Dopplr users now joining us as strategic investors is tremendously exciting. Martin, Saul, Joichi and Reid have a great sense of business, technology, design and travel.”

You can find me at Dopplr as Danica.

Warning: don’t catch up at Quechup!

If you receive the invite from friends or anyone to join social networking site Quechup, don’t do it! Disregard that Quechup email and don’t visit the website. Last night I was caught up by invitation of reputable friend, didn’t know for this spam, and this morning I got alert email about this. I tried now to log into the site and delete my account - but I failed. Such a fraud. I don’t know how to delete my account as I am afraid that my address book will be spammed by this Quechup site!

Boing Boing wrote about it few hours ago:

“The blogs are calling it ‘the Q problem’ and a ‘trust virus.’ Bad juju, in general, not to mention they are one of those sites that sends you your selected username and password in the clear.” By the time you read this, there will probably be some news articles out about how evil they are. Until then, watch out.

What you can do is what Howard Rheingold suggested: to send a message to both legals@quechup.com and spam@quechup.com insisting that they sease and desist all spamming activity from their site immediately.

I  apologize to all my friends and non-friends from my address book that they might receive (without my control and notice) invite from me to join this site - don’t do it, just disregard that Quechup email!
